Why I Chose the CPA Path
When I first graduated from high school, I was torn between two career paths: becoming a pharmacist or becoming a CPA. Both career paths seemed like solid options, so upon graduating from high school, I decided to work in a pharmacy to see if that was the right direction for me. While the work was fulfilling, it did not offer the structure I craved. That realization led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting, with the ultimate goal of becoming a CPA.
Choosing to pursue a CPA license has turned out to be the best decision that I have made. The work fits my personality so well—it is analytical, organized, and deeply impactful, which fuels my passion and keeps me motivated. But making the decision was only the first step; the real challenge came when I had to juggle work, studying, and life outside of my career goals. Fortunately, I was not navigating this alone. The team at Universal Bookkeeper has been incredibly supportive, offering flexibility, encouragement, and even study space when I needed it.
Starting the CPA Exam Journey
As soon as I started studying for the CPA exam, I realized just how intense the process would be. I knew it would be difficult, but one of the biggest challenges is one that many people do not mention; work-life balance. As my exam date quickly approached, my studying habits became more intense, and the weeks leading up to my exam consisted of studying at the office until 8pm, spending the whole weekend studying, cutting out the gym, and seeing friends and family less often. I realized that my life no longer had balance in it, and eventually, I knew I had to make a change.
Lessons Learned and a Shift in Strategy
After I took my first test, I made a conscious effort to reconnect with the people and activities I love. I spent more time with friends and family and allowed myself space to breathe on weekends. This experience helped me realize that my study plan was not structured in a way that truly worked for me. I was spending too much time on study methods that were not working for me, thus requiring more time studying, and I needed to take a different approach.
With encouragement from my colleagues at Universal Bookkeeper—some of whom had also been through the CPA exam process—I asked for advice. They shared what worked for them, and I started making changes. I focused more on practice questions and made notes on why my answer choice was wrong. This shift in strategy not only improved my understanding of the material but also gave me more confidence in my ability to retain information and apply it effectively.
The Power of a Supportive Team
Having a team that understands the CPA journey made all the difference. The guidance and support I received from the Universal Bookkeeper team helped me push through challenging moments. Whether it was study tips or words of encouragement—their support made me feel like I did not have to do this alone.
Advice for Others Studying While Working
If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone who is juggling work and the CPA exam, it would be: do not lose yourself in the process. Although I am at the beginning of this journey, I am eternally grateful that I realized early on that it is not okay to lack balance in my life. Make time for what brings you joy, even if it is only for a few hours each week. Go to the gym, enjoy a night out with friends, read a book—whatever helps you feel grounded. Give yourself grace. You can be dedicated to your goals and still honor the rest of your life.
Moving Forward with Balance
As I continue preparing for my next CPA exam, I am approaching it with a new mindset—one that prioritizes both productivity and balance. I am incredibly grateful for the team at Universal Bookkeeper—especially Justin and Beth—for their constant support. The CPA exams are a learning experience, in more ways than one—not only do they test technical knowledge, but they also teach you resilience, discipline, and the importance of finding balance. I hope my experience will help others who are balancing work and studying for the CPA exam realize they’re not alone.
